12.5 Principles of Entrepreneurial Greatness

Monday, August 14, 2006 at 04:51AM

This is certainly not the real title, but it might as well be as far as I'm concerned. The Little Red Book of Selling (entry also listed under books) is not about how to be an entrepreneur - it's about how to freaking get people through the door. No quick fixes - rather direct advice (with examples) of what you're not doing, what you're doing wrong and how to fix the issue.

This is a sales book - and sales is everything from acquiring customers to advisors to getting venture capital. Thus, the suggestions given apply very well to all levels of entrepreneurship. Interesting read for entrepreneurs & aspiring entrepreneurs: Blue Ocean Strategy

Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant
I've added this book to the suggested readings list. It's a great read for anyone interested in building a business, and an especially great read if you're coming out of big corporate America. The book is an international best seller, and talks about how great businesses are built in saturated markets. In parts 1-2 the book covers:

  • [yellow tail] - created substantial growth in a stagnant, saturated market
  • iTunes - need i say more here
  • Cirque du Soleil - grew out of a market with small, and declining market share to achieve substantial growth
  • Curves - health club for women that has illustrated exceptional growth by simplifying the offering and attracting an overlooked segment of the market.

Blue Ocean Strategy gives an interesting frame work for thinking about how to find your next venture.

New Book Added to The Suggested Books List

Thursday, March 23, 2006 at 07:11AM

For those of you who are not subscribed to suggested books, The Perfect Store - a book about how eBay got started and grew - is the newest addition to the list. I actually read the book about a year ago... here is the post:

The Perfect Store

In my opinion, individuals starting p2p internet startups should pick up this book as it highlights the importance of community, what creates it and how they can help a startup survive.

Sorry for being so brief here ... I read it too long ago to be more detailed.
